Important Dos and Don’ts for Patients in Case of a Dental Emergency

A dental problem that requires prompt treatment to reduce bleeding or severe pain or salvage a tooth qualifies as a dental emergency. If left untreated, a dental emergency may result in severe pain, swelling, or tooth loss.

If you are a resident of Fort Smith, AR or Rogers, AR, contact Parklane Family where your dental emergency will be treated promptly and with utmost care.

Dos and Don’ts to Follow in the Event of a Dental Emergency

Broken Tooth

If a tooth is broken, gather up all the broken pieces before heading to the dentist. In some cases, your dentist may be able to fix the broken tooth.

Knocked-out Tooth

If your tooth has become loose or has been knocked out, try as much as you can to keep it in its socket. Place a piece of gauze over it to help hold it in place and make sure you don’t swallow it. Do not touch the root of the tooth to prevent infection.

Swollen Jaw

A swollen jaw may be the result of a tooth infection, gum disease, or even oral cancer, requiring immediate dental care. Before reaching the dentist, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to your face to reduce swelling. Avoid any heat application over the swelling.

Bitten Lip or Tongue

This dental emergency should be treated by applying a cold compress to reduce the swelling and applying pressure to control the bleeding. If heavy bleeding occurs, visit an emergency dentist as soon as possible.

Persistent Toothache

For persistent toothaches which generally occur due to cavities, gently rinse your mouth with warm water. Using floss, remove any food debris that may be stuck between the teeth. Over-the-counter analgesics such as aspirin and ibuprofen may help relieve the discomfort for a while but you will still have to visit your dentist as soon as possible.

Broken or Fractured Jaw

This dental emergency should be addressed immediately with a visit to the dentist’s office. Apply a cold compress en route to reduce swelling.

Broken Braces

To cover sharp ends of any loose or broken wires from braces or to relieve irritation, apply orthodontic wax or a piece of gauze. If a wire gets stuck in the soft tissues, don’t try to pull it out yourself. Instead, seek immediate treatment from your dentist.
